Think of the phrase ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ – nowhere is that truer than when we’re talking about company logos. ‘Logo’ is an abbreviation of the word logotype, from ‘logos’ the Greek word for word! A logo is defined as being an emblem or symbol used by organisations and individuals to promote instant public recognition.
If our goal is instant recognition within your particular sector or customer group, you really need a logo that represents your business values, qualities and offering. No wonder that choosing a logo is often cause for deep thought, not to mention much expense!
So what is a good logo worth to your business? For many companies with high profile brands, their logo is an asset valued as part of their balance sheet – and eventual sale price. What I do know is that a bad logo can cost your business.
Nothing frustrates me more than those who start out in business by investing in the latest smartphone and a laptop but just throw together a business card with little regard to their chosen image. Even if it does ‘make do’ for now, it could quickly become a millstone around their necks and a limiting factor for business growth.
If you’re just starting up, please invest a little time, thought and money in developing a good logo – and a strapline (for more on this subject, read our blog). A logo is your first step towards developing a brand. It characterises your business and should tell customers and prospects about your values and the essence of the product or services you are selling. If you want to attract your ideal client, you need to give them the right messages and a good logo can act as a powerful go-between.
A little time spent establishing strong marketing collateral at the outset will repay you in spades later on. After all, isn’t that what marketing is all about? Attracting your ideal client in the most effective – and profitable way.

Bass Breweries claims the fame of having the first ever logo. In the nineteenth century Bass Pale Ale was the highest selling beer in the UK. By 1877 Bass had become the largest brewery in the world with an annual output totalling one million barrels. On the back of the distinctive red triangle that was to become the UK’s first registered trademark, Bass pale ale was exported throughout the British Empire.
